There’s a moment on “Did I Make You Worry,” the title track of Tim Hawkes’ Make You Worry record, where it all comes together. Carefully layered vocal harmonies, a gently insinuating melody, searching lyrics and a compelling overall sound. It’s the kind of moment that musicians strive for, the culmination of years of experience and experimentation, a destination in some ways, but in others only a way station on their musical journey. It’s the centrepiece of “Make You Worry,” a beguiling set of moody, well-crafted songs from Hawkes, a journeyman singer and songwriter and producer Brent Bodrug (Alanis Morissette). The sound of “Make You Worry” is modern – the album features several dance-oriented remixes and a funky, bass-driven approach. Drawing on influences from several decades, Make You Worry is a record that pushes pop music to the edge. The songs are skillfully crafted, featuring a melodic approach. Each song masterful in its own right, but let it play. Make You Worry demands to be listened to as a whole.
